Barrett Moving & Storage's Product Transportation Planner Visits China
Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) July 18, 2007 -- Ten days in China gave Barrett's Product Transportation Planner Troy DeGroot a rapid introduction to doing business and international shipping (http://www.barrettmoving.com/Intl_Features.cfm) in one of the world's fastest-changing markets. As a part of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's MBA program, Troy and a group of his fellow students traveled to Shanghai and Beijing. They visited companies with ties to UW-Milwaukee, such as GE Healthcare, Briggs & Stratton and Kohler Company, where DeGroot quickly learned about transport within China.
"At each province border the truck has to be unloaded, and the shipment is transferred to another truck for transport in the next province," DeGroot related. "It means it can sometimes take ten days to ship something one thousand miles within the country. The government is working on agreements to speed up the transport, but right now businesses have to take into account the longer transit time for everything they ship."
As demographics shift within China, major cities like Shanghai, Chongquing and Beijing are absorbing a large increase in population and in businesses. In a June 1, 2007 New York Times article, Howard W. French writes that, "In 1978, a mere 18 percent of Chinese lived in cities and towns. By 2010, the authorities estimate that 50 percent will, as part of what demographers and other experts say is the greatest migration in human history."
In Shanghai, DeGroot found that because space is at such a premium, offices are sometimes located in apartment buildings. Not surprisingly, he noticed the large numbers of people traveling on bikes, mopeds, and on foot in both Shanghai and Beijing. "It's almost overwhelming," he says. "There is motion everywhere - almost a mirror of the pace of change in the country. Yet, there are aspects of work life that are still very traditional - lots of manual labor, for instance."
Barrett's International Manager, Mike Johnson, has noticed an influx of Chinese graduates moving to the United States to work for U.S. companies. At the same time, U.S. companies with manufacturing facilities in China are moving managers to their sites within the country. "I expect this trend to continue and even increase in the next year," Johnson says. "We're able to get shipments transported and cleared very quickly, working with our agents in China, once the documentation is in order. We're glad to have the system in place to keep our customers on track."
DeGroot was intrigued by the food, and noticed that the Chinese use every part of the animal in cooking, and offer some foods that you might not find "back home." In fact, DeGroot ate scorpion on a stick. "They had everything on a stick, from scorpion to sea horses," he remembers. "It made pickles on a stick at the State Fair seem pretty tame."
With the 2008 Olympics set for Beijing, China is in the world spotlight for many reasons. Its own growing economy and the challenges it faces as a major player in the world economy will not diminish that spotlight. "We'll undoubtedly see more and more of an exchange between our countries," comments Johnson. "China is the great expanding marketplace of our time. The influence that their economy will have worldwide is just beginning to become evident."
Climbing the Great Wall capped off DeGroot's China experience. "It was like going up a mountain," he says. "It's hard to imagine the size of the Great Wall, and how steep the terrain it follows. There are steps you climb that literally go up into the sky - they disappear into the clouds."
